A key advantage to Ionic’s solid state batteries is that they are inherently safe. In this video, we show the destruction of a 5.5 Watt-hour Ionic Materials battery as it powers an iPad which has had its original battery removed.

 

Ionic’s battery is made with a lithium metal anode, an LCO cathode, and Ionic’s solid polymer electrolyte. It remains very safe, without smoking, flaming, or exploding even after being impaled by a screwdriver and then cut in half with a paper cutter (both of which result in a direct short circuit that causes the iPad to turn off).  Even more, the battery continues to power the iPad after this abuse. This remarkable achievement is only made possible by Ionic’s solid electrolyte.
